The flat metal top carries heat from the silicon to the cooler through a thin layer of thermal compound.
Substrate
Inspect the green material around the lid. Its internal connections route signals between the dies and package contacts.
Contact pads
Turn the package over. The pads meet spring contacts inside the motherboard socket.
